Five Steps To A Healthier Smile

Everyone wants a beautiful confident smile. The way your smile looks can leave a lasting impression on people the minute they see you. A clean white smile exudes confidence, while a stained smile may give the wrong impression. If your smile is not as bright as you would like, do not worry. There are steps you can take today to gain back that pretty healthy smile.

Visit your dentist: If you are like most people, you stay on the go all the time. Your priority may not be going to the dentist. However, you should make it a priority. Not only can your dentist clean your teeth to make them look clean, your dentist can also perform x-rays and exams to determine whether or not you have other dental issues that need to be addressed. In addition, you can do something about those brittle and cracked teeth. Your dentist can repair those and it will give you the healthy smile you want.

Brush and floss: Your mother was right. You should brush and floss your teeth everyday. Most people brush at least twice a day, but you should also take the time to floss each day. When you brush and floss each day, you are removing tiny food particles that get stuck between your teeth and in the tiny crevices of the tooth’s surface. If you don’t take the time to remove these particles, it can cause plaque, which leads to tooth decay and cavities. In addition, brushing and flossing is very important to the health of your gums. You need healthy gums to keep your teeth in place. If your gums bleed or hurt, that is not normal and you should see your dentist.

Avoid sticky foods: Sticky and sweet foods are good to eat, but they are certainly not good for your teeth. When you foods that are laden with sugar, or are sticky, they can contribute to plaque and tooth decay. Even foods that are relatively healthy such as raisins and crackers can become stuck in your teeth. When you do eat these foods, make sure you brush.

Drink water: Water is healthy for your whole body. When you stay hydrated with water, it also benefits your mouth and your teeth. You need the fluoride that water has, too. Fluoride fights tooth decay. In addition, avoid beverages that are known to stain the teeth. Red wine, coffee, dark colored sodas and tea stain your teeth. If you drink these beverages on a regular basis, then you need to take extra care to brush your teeth and to have your teeth cleaned by your dentist on a regular basis.

Avoid tobacco: Tobacco will also stain your teeth and tobacco use and cigarette smoking leads to gum disease and tooth decay. It is very hard to remove the stains caused by smoking, so it is best to just not do it. When you use tobacco, you are also at a much higher risk of developing oral cancer. If you smoke then you should be aware of the symptoms of oral cancer. Check for swollen and bleeding gums, lesions in the mouth that do not heal, white or yellow patches in your mouth and loose teeth. If you exhibit any of these symptoms, you need to see your doctor or dentist.
