Dental Assistant, Is It A Well Pursuing Career?

Ten years ago, there was a very limited need for a dental assistant. At present, dental assistants are now beginning to get more and more demands in different nations. This means that increasingly number of dentists are now seeking someone to help them with their daily jobs, and that someone is more commonly noted as dental assistants.

Just like any other profession, a dental assistant must also take a licensure exam and other accreditations as evidence of their certification and eligibility in this profession. There may be different accreditations that some States may call for. Some States may restrict the duties designated to a dental assistant depending on the certifications he had acquired.

The positive thing about this, such as for a person successfully passing the CDA exam for example, the dental assistant is given a much higher probability for work when searching a job. This is because his credentials would be a proof of his credibility to do the job. Also, he must also go under on-the-job training in order to get knowledgeable with the environment. As dentists have unique trends and ways of performing things, a dental assistant should get familiar with those so he can do his job better, faster and with more ease.

Some of the chores that are assigned to a dental assistant may include a combination of patient assistance, dentist assistance and office tasks. Patient assistance may include providing instructions on general oral health care, assisting them to the dental chair and keeping them comfortable. Dentist assistance would include handling dental equipment needed by the dentist during the actual process, preparing the dental x-ray equipment, and disinfecting the dental tools and equipment. Office jobs may include preparing and keeping the patients’ dental records, scheduling appointments and receiving payments.

A dental assistant is different from a dental hygienist, so these two should not be confused with each other. Although there may be some jobs that a dentist and a hygienist may confused as overlapping, the two are completely different professions. A dental assistant, dental hygienist and a dentist, are all different professions that require different levels of education and licensure to attain. Even though a dental assistant demands the less period of time to pursue, it is in fact, a well paying job. Counting on the fact that it is now a very in demand job, that would mean lots of job opportunities to many.

One good thing about the job of being a dental assistant is that you can consider it as a stepping stone if you want to pursue dentistry later on. There are many government and other bureaus that assists needy students with pursuing any educational program or training that they want to attain. When you think that you would like to be a dentist but you don’t have the ability to take the course, you can instead be a dental assistant first and then take some education programs later on if you can afford it. The good news is that, whether you have reached your ultimate goal or not, being a dental assistant is a very satisfying job that you should be grateful for by doing your job right and at your best all the time.
